It mixes the power and distortion of their self-titled 1994 debut with the more melodic thrust of Follow The Leader. It will sell millions to disaffected fans all too able to identify with singer Jonathan Davis’s disenchantment with life. This is one gloomy, antagonistic, sprawling monster of a record. On the bagpipe-laden “Dead”, the gravel-throated vocalist roars “All I want is to be happy”, while “Beg For Me” sees him pleading, “Please give me some of it back/The feelings that I had.” The music is relentless; occasionally spooky (“Hay Daddy”), occasionally reminiscent of Led Zepellin’s Eastern phase (“Somebody Someone”), but always unforgiving.
